After a formal order from the Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India,
Shri G K Pillai, CMD, HEC Ltd is entrusted with the additional charge of Chairman of
HMT Machine Tools Limited, Bangalore.
HMT Machine Tools Limited a wholly-owned Subsidiary of HMT Limited is one of the oldest
and well known public sector undertakings established in 1953 and manufactures a diversified
range of products. It is a multi-unit, multi-locational, multi-technology company manufacturing
a wide variety of “STATE-OF-THE-ART” Machine Tools. Its units are spread over five locations at
Bangalore (Karnataka), Hyderabad (AP), Pinjore (Haryana), Ajmer (Rajasthan) and Kalamassery
(Kerela) with each unit specialized in a particular family of Machines. The Sales and Service
network is spread across the length and breadth of the country.
HMT-MTL has been ailing for some time and Government of India in its efforts to revive the
company is considering a revival package. The government has appointed Shri G K Pillai as
Chairman of the ailing company, looking at his contributions in the ‘Turn Around’ of HEC Limited.
The revival of HEC limited had been a challenging and herculean task and was thought to be
impossible at one point of time but Mr. Pillai made it possible by his dynamic leadership.
He joined HEC as CMD in May 2007 and relentlessly worked towards creation of a highly motivated
and dedicated team at all levels. Dedicated efforts of top management and hard work of fellow
workmen, supervisors and officers not only increased HEC’s turnover from ` 159 Cr. in 2004-05 to `
512 Cr. during the year 2009-10 but also registered net profits for four consecutive years – a
first for HEC. The team HEC today is a motivated lot and the company puts lot of emphasis on
customer responsiveness, time delivery, quality and reliability.
Shri.G.K.Pillai after completing his B.E. (Hons.) from B.I.T.S. Pilani in 1973 joined
Instrumentation Limited, a Government of India Enterprise, in Palakkad, Kerala. After a
successful career there for 21 years, he joined the private sector company Fisher Sanmar Ltd
as Vice President and rose to become the Chief Executive of the company. Having a successful
stint in both Public Sector and Private sector industry, Shri Pillai was selected to head the
prestigious organization of the country – HEC at Ranchi as its Chairman- cum-Managing Director.
Under his visionary and charismatic leadership, HEC was awarded the prestigious SCOPE Award
for Excellence in Management and Turnaround 2007-08 by H.E. the Prime Minister of India,
Dr. Manmohan Singh on the 15th October 2009 at Delhi. It also bagged the Industrial Excellence
Award – conferred by the Indian Nuclear Society for development of special nuclear grade
steel – the first time in India and India becoming the sixth country in the world to achieve it.
At the Asia-Pacific HRM Congress in Bangalore in September 2010, HEC Ltd, Ranchi was awarded
under "Innovation in HR Development & Change" for good work & internal development in HR
processes.. Shri GK Pillai was honored with Turn Around Leader Award for his outstanding
contribution to Indian Industry. His penchant for team spirit and customer responsiveness
has brought excellent results for HEC and his additional charge as Chairman of HMT-MTL will
definitely auger well and bring good results for the Company.
